If you think you’ve been hacked, follow these important steps:

  1. Attempting to contact the hacker will be useless. It generally does not work in the victims favor and you won’t be able to “negotiate” with them. Paying a ransom frequently results in lost money and no data returned, so DO NOT PAY any ransom.

  2. Change any relevant passwords for affected websites immediately (such as banking or social media). You have a very short window to reverse any unauthorized changes, so do not wait. Wherever possible, always use multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  3. Immediately contact a trained, certified security incident handler to ensure that not only is the problem contained, but also help prevent any future hacks or compromises.
